Electric Blind Controls Chesterfield | Remote or App?

Written by: | Posted on: | Category:

A remote on the coffee table, an app on your phone and blinds that move automatically are three different ways of using motorised shading. Before choosing electric blinds, it is worth deciding which of those you actually want.

The motor is only part of the purchase. Your chosen controls need to work with it, suit the people using the room and be set up around your home. At Etienne Curtains & Blinds in Chesterfield, we can help you consider the blind and its operation together.

Start with the everyday adjustment

Think about the moment when you normally adjust the blind. Perhaps you want to lower the living-room blinds without getting up, or reach a high window without stretching over furniture.

A compatible handheld remote or wall control may cover that need. Ask how individual blinds are selected and whether a group can be operated together. The arrangement should be understandable to everyone who uses it.

A phone app is not a requirement for every electric-blind installation. Equally, if app control matters to you, explain that before the motor and control system are specified.

App control needs a compatible system

A blind with a motor is not automatically ready to connect to any app or smart speaker. The exact motor, control technology and any required hub must work together.

Somfy’s TaHoma system is one example of a hub-based arrangement for compatible products. It can provide app control and routines, but the proposed equipment still needs checking. Do not assume that features available on one installation will be available on every motorised blind.

If you already have smart-home equipment, bring its exact product details to the discussion. That is more useful than simply saying the house has “smart controls”.

Decide what an automatic routine should do

Pressing a button in an app and having a blind move automatically are different functions.

For a suitable system, a routine might operate selected blinds at a scheduled time. Sensor-led operation instead responds to a measured condition, using compatible equipment. These choices should be based on the room and the system being supplied.

Describe a useful outcome: opening a bedroom blind on workday mornings, for example, rather than asking for every blind in the house to follow the same command. Also ask how to make an ordinary adjustment when your routine changes. Include setup in the conversation

App control involves more than downloading an app after the blinds have been fitted. Discuss where any hub will sit, how it connects and how operation will be checked in the actual rooms.

Recent Somfy support guidance on TaHoma radio-range problems is a useful reminder that communication and commissioning deserve attention alongside the motor. Follow the instructions for the selected equipment and ask for advice if operation is inconsistent; an extra hub or a replacement motor should not be assumed to be the answer.

At handover, ask for a demonstration of the functions you have chosen. Practise selecting a single blind, operating a group where provided and adjusting any agreed routines.

Keep charging and access practical

Controls do not determine the power source.

A battery-powered blind still needs a workable charging arrangement; a wired blind needs an appropriate electrical supply.

Our earlier battery-versus-wired advice covers that decision in more detail. When choosing the controls, keep it on the checklist so that the blind is convenient to maintain as well as operate.

Bring photographs of your windows and a short description of what you want to do.

Mention existing controls, any smart-home equipment and who will use the blinds.
